About Songs with Sarah

Along with a growing staff of teachers, this school has managed to tread the waters of the last few years and become a thriving music center in South Minneapolis, even when most things could only be online. Sarah is committed to teaching young children through movement and audiation and only works with teachers that have a strong musical background and a degree in music. All of our early childhood music teachers are trained in Music Learning Theory, which is an audiation based approach to teaching music, creating space for your child to learn to develop critical thinking skills in music, relying on their ears over their eyes. Our teachers are top notch and understand how children learn music, through listening, movement, pattern play, singing and audiating in diverse tonalities and meters and experiencing an overall bath of singing and playfulness (yes, even for adults!).

For all ages, we create, improvise, and push the boundaries of traditional music here at Songs with Sarah Music School and we can't wait to see how things continue to unfold.

The Journey From Music Class to Music School

Songs with Sarah Music School might be new to you, but it's been built from the ground up for the past 7 years. After having her own children and moving from Brooklyn, NY back to her homeland of Minneapolis, Sarah took her growing songbook of compositions and started her own early childhood music program. It blossomed after several years, going beyond just babies and toddlers to preschoolers, elementary aged children and now teenagers and adults.

Her vision to teach children internally instead of relying on reading notation, took off in South Minneapolis and before she knew it, she had a thriving program that included early childhood music and movement classes, group piano classes and instrumental and vocal lessons in her new location at 404 East 48th Street. We have a large community space for family style classes, two large piano spaces for group classes and several smaller, but still quite spacious studios for individual lessons and practice. Songs with Sarah Music School was born during one of the most trying times of many parents' lives: The Covid-19 global pandemic. However, despite the incredible roadblocks of the last year, our clients stayed by our side and we have continued to grow with their support and commitment to helping their child learn music in the best way possible.

Creativity.

Movement.

Audiation.

A child’s musical experiences from birth to age five have a particularly profound impact on the extent to which she will be able to understand, appreciate, and achieve in music as an adult. Children must be exposed to a rich variety of music during these years in order to develop the necessary readiness for formal music learning when they are older.
— Edwin Gordon

Audiation is the foundation of musicianship. It takes place when we hear and comprehend music for which the sound is no longer or may never have been present. One may audiate when listening to music, performing from notation, playing “by ear,” improvising, composing, or notating music...
